SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (July 22, 2017) – Guadalupe Teviño Kelly Little League from Tamaulipas emerged victorious at the 2017 Mexico Region Little League Baseball® Championship in Sabinas Coahula, Mexico, defeating Matamoros Little League, 3-1, on Friday, July 21. A total of 14 teams participated in the seven-day event.

This will be Guadalupe Teviño Kelly Little League’s second trip to Williamsport in eight years. The team qualified in 2009, advancing all the way to the International Championship game before losing to the Asia-Pacific Region, 9-4. This year, the team went a perfect 7-0 in regional tournament play to earn its ticket to the Little League Baseball World Series.

Mexico owns the distinction of being the first ever International team to win the Little League Baseball World Series, and it came in perfect fashion. Angel Macias, playing for Monterrey Little League, pitched a perfect game in the 1957 final, which still stands as the only perfect game in a Little League Baseball World Series Championship Game. This year marks the 60thanniversary of the historical game.

The regional tournament was filled with high-scoring action for all teams from start to finish, with a total of 424 runs being scored in 39 games. For more information on the 2017 Little League Baseball Mexico Region Tournament, visit LLBWS.org.

The first-round pairings for the 2017 Little League Baseball World Series were drawn and announced on Thursday, June 15. Guadalupe Teviño Kelly Little League will open the tournament with a game against the representative of the Latin America Region on Thursday, August 17. Spanning the course of 10 days, 32 games will be played in the 2017 Little League Baseball World Series in Williamsport, culminating in the Championship Game, which is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 27.
