Australian champion fills first 2016 World Series birth

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT -- The first berth in the Little League World Series field has been filled.

Australian media reports a team from New South Wales won the country's national championship Sunday and an automatic berth in the series that will be played in South Williamsport Aug. 18-28.

Hills defeated another New South Wales team, Central Coast, 7-3 for the title. The champions scored 75 runs in six games during the tournament while allowing only 4.

Hills manager Les Stockdale was quoted in Australian media as saying representing Australia in the world series is "the ultimate prize for a young baseballer, It's what they all aspire to do."

The Asia-Pacific champion will be the next to be determined on July 2 followed by Mexico July 16. The eight United States teams and the Canadian champion will not be known until just before the series.
