Coquivacoa Little League from Maracaibo, Venezuela Wins 2014 Latin America Region Championship, Advancing to the Little League Baseball® World Series

South Williamsport, PA - As Little League celebrates its 75th Anniversary at the 2014 Little League Baseball® World Series, a league from Venezuela with a lot of history will return to South Williamsport this summer. In Managua, Nicaragua, Coquivacoa Little League from Maracaibo, Venezuela, captured the banner as Latin America Region Champions with the 8-5 win, defeating Tomas Munoz Little League from Panama City, Panama on Sunday, June 29. The league will return to South Williamsport, Pa., for the tenth time in the 68-year history of the Little League Baseball World Series.
“Coquivacoa has a long history of representing the Latin America Region at the Little League Baseball World Series,” said Patrick Wilson, Little League® Baseball and Softball Senior Vice President and International Tournament Director. “We are excited to welcome back the team from Maracaibo, and look forward to an exciting World Series this August.”

Coquivacoa Little League made its first appearance in the Little League Baseball World Series in 1974. Twenty years later, the league won the 1994 Little League Baseball World Series, becoming the first team from Latin America to capture the banner since the famous Monterrey, Mexico team won their second World Series title in 1958. In 2008 and 2009, Coquivacoa Little League made back to back appearances in the World Series, and the league has had three players from their World Series teams play Major League Baseball, including Wilson Alvarez, who played in the 1982 Little League Baseball World Series.
At this year’s region tournament, the team from Venezuela dominated on defense, allowing only nine runs in five games. Learn more about the Latin America Region Tournament.
The Latin America Region Champions will face the Japan Region Champions on Friday, Aug. 15, at 5 p.m. at Volunteer Stadium, airing on ESPN2. The Japan Region Championship game is scheduled for Saturday, July 5. All games at the Little League Baseball World Series will be broadcast on the ESPN family of networks, the Watch ESPN app or ABC.
The 68th Little League Baseball World Series begins on Thursday, Aug. 14 in South Williamsport, Pa., with the Championship Game scheduled for 3 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 24, airing on ABC. The World Series will culminate the year-long celebration of the 75th Anniversary of Little League.
