Facing elimination, the Southeast Region Champions from Nashville, Tenn., emerged victorious from their game against the Mid-Atlantic Region Champions from Newark, Del., by a score of 10-0 in four innings with the help of a grand slam by Zane Denton.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Denton sent a deep fly ball over the center-field wall, giving Southeast a 6-0 lead.

“It felt really great,” Denton said after the game.

“He’s a tough out and that’s what we need in our three-hole,” manager Chris Mercado added.

Denton wasn’t the only player to homer for Southeast. In the bottom of the fourth with one runner on and a chance to bring into play the ten-run rule and end the game, Knox Preston sent another ball over the center-field wall.

Mercado said it’s great that the team has started to hit. “It’s fun when we start hitting the ball,” he said. “Once they get relaxed we’re going to have fun.”

Mid-Atlantic’s best chance to come back in the game came in the top of the third. Already down 6-0, they were able to load the bases with two outs and Joseph Davis at bat. With a full count, Davis ended up striking out looking on a pitch on the inside corner of the plate.

Despite the loss, manager Ludman was still positive after the game. “They’ve enjoyed every minute. So have I,” he said. He went on to say that even though it is the end of the season and the team is disappointed, they still went farther than any other Newark, Del., team.

While it is back to school for the players from Delaware, the dream of a Little League Baseball® World Series championship is still alive for Nashville, Tennessee. Southwest’s next game will be another elimination contest on Tuesday, Aug. 20 at 8 p.m., at Lamade Stadium against the winner of the Midwest and Northwest game.
