Ana Mooney, a softball player in the Federal Little League of Hagerstown, MD., and Jack Mooney, a baseball player in Pittsford Little League of Pittsford, NY, were visiting theWorld of Little League today. They took time to raise the Michigan flag at the Viewing Plaza in celebration of the Great Lakes Region Championship Game.
South Williamsport, PA - Chad Lorkowski belted two home runs and struck out 10 to power Michigan’s Grosse Pointe Woods-Shores Little League past Jackie Robinson West Little League from Illinois to win the Great Lakes Region Championship game, 10-3, Saturday afternoon at Stokely Field in Indianapolis.

Jackie Robinson West Little League, vying for its first trip to Williamsport in 30 years (1983), was battered early, allowing eight runs in the first two innings.

Chad Lorkowski, at 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds, was dominate for Grosse Pointe Woods-Shores Little League, crushing home runs in consecutive at-bats, while allowing three runs on six hits and owning the strike zone in his five innings of work en route to the mound win. Jimmy Mazzola closed out the game, working a scoreless sixth inning to secure the region title.

Outscoring its opponents 59-13 and winners of five straight games in the region tournament (5-0), Jackie Robinson Little League was held without a hit for three innings. The Illinois state champions collected their first hit and first run in the bottom of the third inning after trailing 9-0.

Grosse Pointe Woods-Shores Little League, losers of two games in Indianapolis, touched up Jackie Robinson West Little League’s starting pitcher Jalen Lemons early and often. Through two innings, Lemons surrendered six hits and nine runs on 69 pitches.

Also having a big game at the plate for the Michigan State Champions was Antonio Moceri, who went 2-for-3, with a home run. Grosse Pointe Woods-Shores Little League Little League, the Great Lakes Region Champion, went 4-2 in the tournament defeating West Side Little League from Hamilton, Ohio, 7-6, in the semifinal. This will be 10th time Michigan is represented in the Little League Baseball World Series and the first since 1998 (Jenison, Georgetown Little League). A team from Grosse Pointe, Mich. reached the Little League Baseball World Series in 1979. Learn more about the Great Lakes Region Tournament.

The Great Lakes Region Champion is scheduled to play against the Western Region Champion in the third game of the U.S. bracket at the 2013 Little League Baseball World Series on Friday, Aug. 16 at 3 p.m. on Lamade Stadium. The Western Region Region Champion will be decided on Saturday, Aug. 11 in San Bernardino., at 9 p.m. Learn more about the Western Region Tournament.
